This data set is an ArcGIS shapefile depicting the Chesapeake Bay Program's (CBP) Watershed Model Phase 5.3 Land-River segments in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and adjacent states, which include New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Land segmentation was based on county boundaries represented by a 1:100,000-scale digital dataset. Fifty of the 254 counties and incorporated cities in the model region were divided on the basis of physiography and topography, producing a total of 310 land segments. River segmentation was derived by editing River segments developed for the CBP's Phase 5.2 Watershed Model so that each River segment would drain into a single CBP Monitoring Segment. The Land segments and River segments were overlaid to create the Land_River segments. The data are projected to the UTM grid coordinate system - Zone 18 NAD83.
<purpose>The U.S. Geological Survey, Chesapeake Bay Program, Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, Maryland Department of the Environment, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the University of Maryland are collaborating on the Chesapeake Bay Regional Watershed Model, using Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN to simulate streamflow and concentrations and loads of nutrients and sediment. In order to establish a framework for model simulation, digital spatial datasets were created defining the discretization of the model region (including the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, as well as the adjacent parts of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina outside the watershed) into land segments, a stream-reach network, and associated watersheds.</purpose>
<supplinf>Any use of trade, product, or firm names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Chesapeake Bay Program or the U.S. Geological Survey. Although this Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata file is intended to document the data set in nonproprietary form, as well as in ARC/INFO format, this metadata file may include some ARC/INFO-specific terminology.

<useconst>These data are to be used with the Chesapeake Bay Regional Watershed Model or projects related to this work. The phase 5 and VA vs. MD issues are as such. In order to avoid shoreline accuracy issues we extended our land and river segments out into the water. This was intended to associate wetlands and near-shore or shallow water data with adjacent land and river segments. It should NOT be used to assign water territory or state ownership of anything not directly associated with land. The FIPS borders in the water are for internal model processing only. </useconst>
